Bahrain International Airport (BIA) is set for a major overhaul during the next five years as it moves to upgrade its facilities and expand passenger capacity through an airport modernisation program.

The work will involve a “comprehensive” redevelopment of the airport to boost passenger and cargo capacity, said a report in Gulf Daily News (GDN).

The cost of the upgrade has been estimated at around $2 billion and once completed, will boost capacity to 13.5 million passengers a year and increase in cargo traffic.

A key event next year being organised by Arabian Reach in association with the Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) will be a showcase of the opportunities that would be created due to the expansion.

BIA's “Aviation development forum for airport supplies, services and technology B2B show” being held on April 1 and 2 next year, offers the aviation industry stakeholders a networking and knowledge-sharing platform.

The event will be held in conjunction with the Middle East cargo and logistics expo and conference.

Bahrain's unparalleled regional connectivity as a major logistics hub with closest links between road, sea and aviation in the region, making the kingdom a strategically attractive place to access $1.5 trillion Arabian Gulf market, organisers said.

BAC Chief Executive Mohamed Al Binfalah said in line with its ongoing efforts to elevate Bahrain's aviation and logistics capabilities, he believed the event will support the growth of transport infrastructure of the Kingdom.

The aviation and logistics industry is getting bigger due to massive investments in airports expansion and new developments that are needed to accommodate the growth in air traffic in the region.

Key speakers from Airports of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia leading the region in terms of airport investments which plays a strategic role for the aviation industry expansion will participate in the concurrent conference.

The event will also focus on the regional airport and logistics developments with decision-makers utilising the show to explore and finalise their procurements and supplies, thereby offering immense business growth prospects for global exhibitors.

“We will be using the event as a platform to scout for new technologies, products and services to support our development programmes and will provide excellent opportunity for logistics companies to explore business opportunities in the kingdom and the region,” Binfalah added.
