The tactical and technical characteristics of the new UAVs, ordered by the Russian Defense Ministry, are already being developed, the Deputy Head of Russian Helicopters Company said.

“We are working on heavier types of drones… We’ve done all necessary R&D work and, together with the Defense Ministry, we are going to work on UAVs weighing over 750 kilograms”, Andrei Shibitov said.

Earlier this year engineers at the United Instrument Manufacturing Corporation (UIMC), a branch of the state-owned innovation corporation Rostec conceptualized a new two-ton unmanned aerial vehicle, capable of transporting supplies, personnel, reconnaissance equipment and onboard weapons systems.

A prototype of the two-ton drone may be approved following a series of tests planned for this summer.

UIMC is developing a universal tracked robotic platform that could be used in both combat and rescue operations, Rostec’s Deputy CEO said.

The platform, entirely designed by Russian engineers, can be controlled remotely and operated in an urban environment, he emphasized.

“The URP-01G robotic platform is a universal armored vehicle designed to work in locations that represent a serious threat to people's lives. It can be used during military action, reconnaissance, emergency situations, rescue operations and demining,” Sergey Skokov said.

According to Skokov, UIMC is set to produce a range of systems based on the URP-01G platform.

The Deputy CEO listed various purposes to which the systems could be tailored, such as carrying out strikes, protecting and patrolling, mine clearing, radiation and chemical reconnaissance, as well as for police and Arctic expeditions.

The creation of robotic systems is considered by a range of Western states to be one of the most promising directions for the development of their Armed Forces. Russia is also assigning special importance to the manufacture of such systems, something underscored by the decision to include them in the 2016-2025 State Armament Program.

Russia will display New Military Robots, Drones at Army-2015 Expo scheduled for 16-19 June at the Patriot culture and leisure park in Kubinka in the Moscow Region.
