Iran and Pakistan are due to set up a direct military hotline between the two countries' Armies to immediately become informed of incidents at their joint borders.

Iran has become the second neighboring country of Pakistan after India that will have hotline between the Director General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of the two countries to check the untoward incidents and unlawful movements across the borders, said Pakistani Advisor for National Security Sartaj Aziz who accompanied Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif during his recent visit to Tehran.

On Sunday 11 May, Iran and Pakistan signed 9 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) in a bid to further expand mutual cooperation in various grounds of security.

The MoUs were signed between Iranian First Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri and Pakistani Prime Minister Mohammad Nawaz Sharif in Tehran.

The two sides agreed to set up a joint committee on border issues and to boost cooperation in their fight against terrorism, drugs trafficking and money-laundering.

Meanwhile, Iranian and Algerian officials in a meeting in Algiers underlined the need for the enhancement of mutual cooperation in combating crime, particularly transnational organized crime.

During the meeting in the Algerian capital city on Thursday, Iranian Police Chief Brigadier General Esmayeel Ahmadi Moqaddam and Algerian Minister of Interior and Local Governments Tayyeb Belaiz discussed security and law enforcement cooperation, especially in organized crime that “can seriously challenge peace and stability in both Iran and Algeria”.

Ahmadi Moqaddam reiterated that Iran is willing to improve security relations with Algeria. Belaiz, for his part, welcomed the further expansion of Algiers-Tehran security ties, and called for more concrete steps to this end.

In recent years, Iran has sought hard to boost ties and cooperation with Africa.

Iran is an observing member of the African Union (AU) and has shown an active presence in previous AU summit meetings.
