Domestically manufactured Tondar (photo) and Tosan missiles were successfully fired at mock enemy targets in the final stage of the Great Prophet 8 war games.

The three-day exercise of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Ground Forces started on Saturday 23 February in the southeastern Iranian province of Kerman.

On Monday, T-72 battle tanks fired Tondar missiles and BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles fired Tosan missiles at the designated targets.

The Tondar missile is able to hit targets at a distance of 4 kilometers and the Tosan missile is able to destroy targets at a distance of 4.5 kilometers.

In the final stage of the maneuvers, IRGC air defense units also repelled missile and aerial attacks by mock enemy forces, and heliborne troops conducted a special operation.

In addition, unmanned aerial vehicles took part in the exercise and carried out operations.

IRGC Ground Forces Commander Mohammad Pakpour said that the war games were held to increase IRGC Forces’ combat capabilities and preparedness and provide them with an opportunity to practice defensive plans which had been devised to deal with possible military threats against the country.

“We managed to achieve all the intended purposes of the exercise,” Brigadier General Pakpour added.  

The IRGC held a three-day missile exercise, entitled the Great Prophet 7, in the heart of the Semnan desert in north central Iran in July 2012
