UK-based BCB International has scooped up the Wales Innovation Award for its Blast Boxers, a pair of boxer shorts which help protect soldiers against blast injuries to the groin area caused by Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

The IEDs are the Taliban’s weapon of choice and greatest risk to troops in Afghanistan, said a statement from BCB, which had recently exhibited its products at IDEX defense expo in Abu Dhabi.

Significant amongst the injuries caused by IEDs are those to the groin area which is under protected by normal body amour, the UK designer and manufacturer of innovative military and survival equipment added.

Andrew Howell, Managing Director of BCB International said: “We are delighted to receive this award from Wales Quality Centre in recognition of our innovative Blast Boxers. We saw off stiff competition from great short-listed companies."

The Blast Boxers are a pair of protective shorts made from Kevlar and a special comfortable fabric worn instead of underwear which have been extensively tried and tested.

"We developed the Blast Boxers to help protect our soldiers against potentially life threatening and life changing injuries to the groin area from IEDs," he added.
