Algeria Receives Italy’s National Director of Armaments; Chief of Staff of Sierra Leone

As part of the Algerian-Italian military cooperation activities programme, the 14th session of the Algerian-Italian Joint Committee for cooperation in the technical-military and defence industry fields was held on 29th and 30th January 2024 at the National Army Circle at Beni Messous.

On this occasion, Major General Mohamed Salah Benbicha, Secretary General of the Ministry of Algeria’s National Defence received in audience, Lieutenant General Luciano Portolano, Secretary General of the Italian Ministry of Defence and National Director of Armaments (photo).

During this meeting, the two parties exchanged views on issues of common interest, the Algerian Ministry of National Defence said in a statement.

The two parties co-chaired the 14th session of the Algerian-Italian Joint Committee for cooperation in the technical-military and defence industry fields, during which an evaluation was made of the activities carried out in 2023 and the provisional programme of activities for 2024. The session provided an opportunity to promote the various areas of cooperation between the armies of the two countries.

At the end of the Algerian-Italian Joint Commission work, the two parties signed the minutes and exchanged symbolic gifts.

In another development, General Saïd Chanegriha, Chief of People’s National Army Staff, received in audience, on Wednesday 24th January 2024, at the headquarters of People’s National Army General Staff, Mr. Lieutenant General Peter Kakowou, Chief of Staff of Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces , who paid an official visit to Algeria, at the head of an important delegation.

The welcoming ceremony began with the salute of the national flag and military honours, presented to the host, by formations representing the different Forces of People’s National Army.

The meeting was attended by the Secretary General of the Ministry of National Defence, Force Commanders and the National Gendarmerie, of Departments and Central Directors of General Staff of People’s National Army and the Ministry of National Defence, as well as members of the Sierra Leonean delegation.

After welcoming the Sierra Leonean delegation, General Chanegriha expressed his confidence in the success of this visit, which follows on from that carried out by the Sierra Leonean President in Algeria, during which the Leaders of the two countries pledged to promote bilateral relations at the highest levels.

“This visit, the first of its kind, follows on from that carried out, at the beginning of the year in Algeria, by Mr. Julius Maada Bio, President of the Republic of Sierra-Leone, at the invitation of Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, President of the Republic, Supreme Chief of the Armed Forces, Minister of National Defence. It reflects the success of this important visit and the commitment of the leaders of the two countries to promote our bilateral relations to a higher level,” General Chanegriha said.

“I am entirely convinced that your visit will constitute the prelude to fruitful and beneficial military cooperation for both countries, particularly at a time when the African continent is going through difficult and complex security circumstances,” he added.

For his part, Lieutenant General Peter Kakowou expressed his gratitude for the hospitality shown to him, as well as to the delegation which accompanied him. Furthermore, he expressed the convergence of points of view on the security issues discussed during the talks, and expressed the hope that his visit to Algeria constitutes a cornerstone to the establishment of solid, fruitful military relations in the service of supreme interests of the two countries.
