The ULAQ Armed Unmanned Surface Vessel, developed by ULAQ Global, a joint venture of ARES Shipyard and Meteksan Defense, has marked a significant milestone by securing its first export contract.
The agreement was formalised with Qatar’s Ministry of Interior during the Milipol Qatar Exhibition which took place in Doha from 29-31 October 2024, representing Turkey’s initial entry into the unmanned surface vessel export market.
Under this contract, an ULAQ 11 PSV (Port Security Vessel) will be constructed to meet the operational needs of the Qatar Coast Guard Command. The vessel is intended for missions such as reconnaissance, surveillance, intelligence gathering, and the protection of critical infrastructure.
The ULAQ 11 PSV will feature a 12.7 mm remote-controlled weapon system, radar, encrypted communication systems, and advanced autonomous software, built on a high-capability platform. This project underscores Turkey’s progress in defence technology and its ability to deliver effective maritime security solutions.
Oguzhan Pehlivanli, Deputy General Manager of ARES Shipyard, commented on the development: “We continue to work on developing the world’s best unmanned surface vessels with different concepts and payloads, aiming to position Turkey as a trend-setting pioneer and allied country in this field.”
Sukru Serkan Sevim, Deputy General Manager of METEKSAN Defense Autonomous Systems, also expressed pride in the milestone, stating, “We are proud to achieve Turkey’s first unmanned surface vessel export and to have developed recognised products that adapt to various sea conditions.” He added that this achievement motivates their continued efforts to meet the needs of both Turkey and allied nations.
The contract reflects Turkey’s expanding influence in the global defence industry, showcasing its capability to produce adaptable and technologically advanced unmanned surface vessels. The delivery of the ULAQ 11 PSV will enhance Qatar’s coast guard operations and strengthen Turkey’s role in international defence partnerships.
