Egypt hosted on 12-13 December, in Cairo, the 17th conference of the Committee of Intelligence & Security Services of Africa (CISSA), the largest intelligence conference in the continent.

Egypt’s General Intelligence Service received the chairmanship of CISSA from Nigeria’s Head of Intelligence for one year, local media reported.

President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi welcomed the Heads of African Security and Intelligence Services. He stressed the need to spare no effort to preserve the security of the African continent and achieve the aspirations of the peoples of its countries.

Al-Sisi hailed the role of the Committee of Intelligence and Security Services of Africa (CISSA), in combating various threats facing the African continent including cross-border terrorism.

Terrorism fragments societies and disturbs development measures while promoting hatred, Al-Sisi stressed.

He added that Egypt, during its current chairmanship of CISSA Conference, aims to achieve security integration in Africa and raise security capabilities to help overcome threats facing the continent.

He called for intensifying coordination between all concerned continental mechanisms, including CISSA to dry up the sources of terrorism.

The President also affirmed the pivotal role played by the CISSA and all African security agencies to combat the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, which has become an escalating threat to security and stability in all African countries.

Furthermore, Al-Sisi asserted the need to pay attention to other security challenges in the continent, including illegal immigration, unemployment, cybersecurity, and organized crime. He noted that the multilateral security system under the umbrella of the CISSA will help achieve regional and international security.

CISSA is an annual gathering that was established in 2004 in Abuja, Nigeria by Heads of Intelligence and Security Services of Africa.

CISSA’s raison d’être is to assist the African Union and all its institutions to effectively address the seemingly intractable security challenges confronting Africa. It was also conceived as mechanism of dialogue, study, analysis, consulting, concerting, and adopting common strategies towards common security challenges among Intelligence and Security Organisations of Africa.
